Maryland DNR has put in a request for $100,000 in 2009 to fund an evaluation and design of a breakwater for the boating facility at Rogues Harbor. Hopefully, the money will remain in the budget for this worthy project. As of this writing, it is still in place.
Rogues Harbor is Elk Neck State Park. Hopefully this happens next year. Would make Elk Neck launch more protected. Now it is very exposed to wind and wakes.
This is very much needed. The ramp should never have been built on that site without a surrounding breakwater. It is virtually a 2 man launch, with the parking so far from the dock/ramp, sometimes it is not safe to leave your boat tied up at the dock while you go to get the truck because of the potential wave action from passing large ships.
I know of at least one tournament guy who had his 19 foot glass boat literally totaled while tied up and getting the vehicle....a passing freighter thru off a large wake, combined with the wind it slammed his boat into the pilings repeatedly...enough to split the hull...
A nice breakwater, like they have built around Leesylvania ramp on the Potomac would prevent that from happening.
From what I read they are modeling it like the Leesylvania ramp.
