OK, I know you guys were not watching the Giants game but...
Right before the end of the first half Arizona elected to take a "Free Kick" in lieu of a field goal attempt with the intention of scoring a field goal. Can't find the rule on the NFL website, but because it was right after a fair catch??? Anyway the defense can not line up in front of the ball or block the kick. Kicker can use a tee and gets a free kick at the goal posts. Defense can return the kick.
Arizona tried a 68 yard kick and it was short and returned 30 yards and time ran out.
I remember this from when I was a kid with a "drop kick" but don't recall seeing it in modern times. (I was a kid a while ago).
I feel like McNabb not knowing the rule...
11. Free Kick: A kickoff or safety kick. It may be a placekick, dropkick, or punt, except a punt may not be used on a kickoff following a touchdown, successful field goal, or to begin each half or overtime period. A tee cannot be used on a fair-catch or safety kick.
1. In addition to a kickoff, the other free kick is a kick after a safety (safety kick). A punt may be used (a punt may not be used on a kickoff).
2. On a safety kick, the team scored upon puts ball in play by a punt, dropkick, or placekick without tee. No score can be made on a free kick following a safety, even if a series of penalties places team in position. (A field goal can be scored only on a play from scrimmage or a free kick after a fair catch.)
6. If time expires while ball is in play and a fair catch is awarded, receiving team may choose to extend the period with one fair catch kick down. However, placekicker may not use tee.

Rules and variations
Fair catch kicks can only occur when a member of the receiving team signals for, and successfully makes, a fair catch (or is awarded a fair catch after a kick-catch interference penalty.)
That team then has the option of restarting play either by snap or fair catch kick.
If the team elects the fair catch kick option, the kicking team lines up at the spot where the fair catch was made, and the opposing team must line up at least ten yards downfield. The kicker then may either place kick the ball from a teammate's hold (a kickoff tee may be used in high school) or drop kick the ball. Three points are awarded for kicking the ball through the uprights.
The fair catch kick has unique rules which distinguish it from other free kicks, such as kickoffs. Most significantly, it is the only variant in which the kicking team can score a field goal. Also, onside kicks are not permitted; the ball cannot be recovered by the kicking team unless first touched by the receiving team. The clock starts when the ball is kicked. If the kick is unsuccessful, the rules are similar to that of a normal missed field goal: the opposing team has the option of fielding the ball and attempting a runback, or of taking possession at the spot of the kick. A successful fair catch kick is followed by a normal kick off.

That's how Tom Dempsy kicked the NFL record field goal all those many years ago. It was after a fair catch and was a free kick.

I don't think that was the case......He tried it that at the end of the game, there was a rush on to block the kick.

hmmm... you're right. Why do I remember him doing a free kick? Perhaps he did that but it wasn't the record kick...
or perhaps it was another attempt to break the record that was a free kick and failed...
