So, how was Vegas? I've never been there, but we're going for a week at the end of the month. Any tips or suggestions? We've already booked several shows, and the obligatory tour of Hoover Dam - but looking for some good places to eat. I may have to take an oxygen tank if they don't get those dang fires out in California............... :rolleyes: Anyone else been there and have some suggestions?
heres how i describe vegas when people ask.
its 1am. your walking down the strip.
directly in front of you is a group of conventioners or just out of college dudes. they're smoking cigars, drunk, and loud.
behind you is a mom and dad with their two kids.
along side of you as you walk, there are various groups of mexican families... moms, dads, and kids... they are trying to force flyers for local escort services into your hands, the guys in front of yous hands, and the family behind yous hands.
never seen the cirque shows, but folks always say they're worth the $100 price tags.
blue man group is neat if you've never seen it.
best shows i've seen have been either stand up comic reviews or the hypnotist shows.
first hypnotist show i saw was at the flamingo, funny as heck, and seemed very real.
second one i saw was at the riviera, didn't seem very real, but was still funny.
the rotating restaurant at the top of the stratosphere it neat, but pricey. we once saw an entire grid of the strip lose power from up there. that made the meal more than worth it.
if you go to the rosewood grill, do not order the 3 foot lobster. it will look cool on the table, but will the consistency of a ball of rubber bands.
one of the casinos on the strip has an amazing seafood buffet. i usually end up there just to eat myself sick on unlimited crab legs.
we ate here last year and i got to see someone thow up on the elevator...

food was good, view was neat, and none of us threw up.
freemont street is always good for a night. the digital ceiling show is neat and the gambling is much cheaper down there. depending on the time of night, you can sometimes find dollar black jack tables. you won't win/lose a bunch, but its good down there if you want to learn or teach someone the game.
of course, there are higher stakes tables too.
btw, hoover dam is pretty cool.
we went out to lake mead one time too. nuthin big, but i could see lots of bass cruising the shorelines.

Great time. I would recommend not booking shows early. Every day we went to the half price ticket outlet (There are a bunch of them) and bought cheaper tix for tonights show.
Shows:
1. Cirque shows are great. We saw Zumanity which is great if you are not shy. It is the "Sensual" one. All of them are great.
2. Sin City Comedy club. Good comedy show
3. Sin City Bad Girls. Don't go, your not old enough.
4. Eiffel Tower - Great view. Find the free ticket coupons.
5. Rio Hotel Bar on the roof (51st floor) - Went for after dinner and before Penn & Teller. Used the free drink coupons. (see dinner below) Since Rio is off strip they have tons of good coupons available and free shuttle bus from all other Harrahs propertys (Paris, Ballys & Harrahs).
6. Penn & Teller - Great show, magic and comedy
7. Jubilee at Ballys - Classic Vegas Show - Very good.
8. Google for who is touring your week.
Dinner:
1. Rio Hotel Steakhouse (I forget the actual name) - On the 50th floor - Great View, great food and use the buy one get one free coupon. The cheaper entre was $38.00 so made for a very reasonable dinner at a high end restaurant with a view. (See Rio show above)
2. Benihanas at the Hilton
3. All you can eat seafood buffet, many of them. We went to the Miracle shops in Planet Hollywood.
4. Food is everywhere.

We're staying at the Rio, so will check out resturants there. I think Rub is one of theirs that I want to hit, it's bar-b-que. We have booked our shows. I wanted to insure good seats - not something in the back. Didn't think we'd get really good ones if we waited until we got there. Penn & Teller are at the Rio, so we are seeing them (got front row center). Blue Man Group and we didn't want to sit in the "poncho section", so we took seats in the 7th row, center (first row behind the "ponchos"). Also had front and center ready to reserve for "KA", one of the Cirque shows, but after reading about it, called the hotel for additional info and ended up changing our seats to the 5th row, because we didn't want to be looking up all night. Freemont Street and Hoover Dam are musts, I guess, and we also booked a lunch cruise on Lake Meade on a paddle wheeler. Should be fun. Also taking a day and going to the Grand Canyon, never seen that and it's the main reason we're going to Vegas, I'm really not a gambler. Vegas hotel and air was about 2/3 the price of staying in Phoenix or Flagstaff. Oh, I heard the hookers hand out business cards - I was thinking of collecting as many as I could and making up one of those books - y'know the ones for business cards - as a momento. :grin:
So, you'll get wet from the blue man group just because you're sitting in the first row that isn't poncho protected...

Afternoon on Lake Meade will be very hot unless you're in an air conditioned dining room, which is very possible.
You can start up a web site for "referrals" after you collect all those business cards. Think you can get pictures to go along with the cards or will your wife feed you to the fishes in the lake?
I was going to give the cards to my son (13 years old) but my wife wouldn't let me so I got him 3 pens with ladies in bathing suits, but when you turn them over....
