Title: 2 more Kistler LTA's
Post by: bassboogieman on September 03, 2009, 07:37:19 PM
The spinning rod sale failed.  So it's back up at a slightly reduced price.  I've also added a casting rod.

Spinning:  HE66MS,  '07 model, 6'6" medium/fast and in excellent condition.
                $135.00 cash
$15.00 shipping (pick up is free, of course)

Casting:  HE69MC, '08 model, 6'9" medium/fast.  I bought 2 of these last spring - they are a fantastic rod,
so I'm definitely keeping the other one.
              $140.00 cash
                 $15.00 shipping (if required)

I accept CASH, Check (if I know you), US Postal Money Order or PAYPAL (add 4% for fees)
brucemoore19365@yahoo.com or call me.  I'm restructuring my rod arsenal, so these have to go to make room for the new ones I have and the others on the way.  Thanks for looking.

Have you thrown the couple you bought?  Let me tell you the new ones I got are really nice, I used  couple Saturday.  didn't bend one of course Marsh Creek is suffering an algae bloom and I saw several dead fish.  What's going on with that.  Son-in-law got one keeper.  But back to the rods - cast like a dream, greater distance with very little effort compared to those Graphite Plus.  Not saying the GP's aren't a decent rod - they certainly are.  But they don't compare to the Argons.  They are very similiar in feel to the Heliums.  Can't wait until my other ones arrive.

A top quality rod will not make you a better fisherman....  :30:

So Loomisman, you finally admit that you're living proof?
I disagree as usual.  I think you are better able to feel bottom structure and detect some bites you may otherwise miss.  If you can't feel the bite you won't know you missed it.  While you still have to find fish, you can (IMHO) get away with a lesser quality rod when fishing reaction type baits - the quality rod really shines when fishing slow presentations and finesse style baits.
And I will finally admit - braid does help when fishing plastics.  I did my "testing" in Canada with the same rod/reels - one with my favorite Yo-Zuri Hybird and the other with Sufix Braid.  The braid made a difference.  Very happy with the Sufix braid.  I was using the Stren braid, and had problems with it digging into the spool and hanging up on the cast with a baitcaster, but I didn't have a similiar problem with the Stren on spinning reels.   Same test and same reel, the Sufix was much better with baitcasting reels, so I've changed over from the Stren on all the reels I have spooled with braid.  Good stuff - if you haven't tried the Sufix braid, you should give it a try.
Oh, and let me get this in - You'd think a grown man with a decent job would use something better than SNOOPY rods from K-Mart.  :undecided:  Pillager has excellent taste in reels - why doesn't that carry over to his rods?  I actually think the rod is more important than the reel.  Once again Pillager is bass-ackwards.

Who says I can't feel the bites?  The biggest trick I learned when I was a kid to feel the bites is to have your index finger on the line when fishing slow.  I always do that, spinning or bait casting, and it telegraphs the faintest twitch up the line.  Even that stretchy mono stuff.

And I agree, you can feel plankton bumping your line with braid!

That's a good way to do it - BUT.  There's always a but.  A high quality, high modulus rod blank transmits vibrations, again in my opinion, better (or perhaps differently is a better word) than the line itself.  Especially those that have followed many custom rod builders (and YES, Kistler) in removing the cork, composite, whaterver, foregrip. Many rod manufacturers are now doing this, along with the split grip (which I still don't think is as important as removal of the foregrip).   That allows the finger to contact the blank ahead of the reel, but the line contact works well, you even see that tenique used by the "pros" even with the "special" rods they use.  I've seen KVD "pinch" the line between thumb and forefinger when dropshotting, so it's a good technique.  Back to the rod, there is a discernalbe difference in vibration down the rod blank when your lure is picked up as opposed to contact with wood or rock.  The combination of a light, sensitive rod, light weight reel and braid is about as good as it gets.  Like a fine scalpel to a surgeon.  You wouldn't want a surgeon cutting on you with a knife from the bottom of your tackle box - would ya?  He could probably get the job done, but I think you get the idea  (surgeon analagy just for you Doc )  But hey, you don't need expensive equipment to catch fish.  People have been catching them since way before graphite was used for rod blanks, or magnesium for reel frames.  As a kid I caught fish with a tree branch with 10' of line with a hook at the end - really.  Did that as a Cub Scout project, can ya believe I was a Cub Scout?  The secret to that is LIVE BAIT.     Whatever floats yer boat (and certainly the expense must be considered) and keeps you happy is the way to go.   Heck, if it wasn't for fools like me - there wouldn't be all the high end fishing equipment available on the marker today.  :undecided:  Finally Pillager, I do appoligize for the "Snoopy rod" comment - a poor attempt at humor. ..........and you're STILL using mono?

My kid has a Snoopy Rod and loves it.

One thing that was not mentioned is that a light rod definately makes things more comfortable for a long day of cast and retrieve.  If you are into reaction baits, a lighter stick and reel are generally, the way to go.

On a personal note, I love the gear and enjoy having several rods for different techniques in my arsenal.

Yeah, especially for us old, arthritic farts.  I just didn't bring it up as I hate thinking about how old and decrepit I am.

A high quality, high modulus rod blank transmits vibrations, again in my opinion, better (or perhaps differently is a better word) than the line itself.

The line transmits the tick into the rod, so why not touch the line?  Then you feel the rod and the transmission medium.

If you're not touching the line, you're missing bites.  I've never felt a bite through the rod that I didn't also feel through the line.  The reverse statement is not true.

A high modulus graphite rod will amplify and transmit the vibrations down the blank from the line between the rod tip to your finger..  More so with braid than any other line.  I find contact with the rod helps distinguish the different vibrations from the rod, as to what type of bottom, wood vs gravel or rock, or if a finny creature is investigating the bait, which I can't quite get by just contact with the line, regardless of what type line it is.  If you're just interested in feeling a bite, you can rely on contact with the line, but I still think the blank is a more reliable tool to determine what's going on at the end of the line.  Another benifit of those blanks would be better feel as to what your running baits are doing.  You can feel the vibration of spinnerbait blades, and the vibration from a running crankbait.  I don't think you'll get that by contact with your line.  You really can tell when a running bait picks up a piece of grass.  That's what all the hype is about regarding rod "sensitivity".  All that sensitivity comes with a trade off, of course.  High modulus, thin walled blanks are not as durable as other types of blanks.  They will not stand up to abuse, high hard hooksets, getting deep scratches in the blank, etc.  So you make your choices, pony up you hard earned money, and fish with what works best for you.  If you haven't tried one of the many premium rods available, it's hard to comprehend just how good those rods are.  Are they a necessary requirement to spend a day fishing.  No.  Just as you can fix your car with a set of Master Mechanic tools from Tractor Supply, or Craftsman from Sears, or if you really want to spend some $$$$ Snap on Tools.  It all depends on how much you want to spend and your personal preferences, regarding economical, mid-point, or premium quality tools.

I did mention when you are fishing slow in my post.  You are correct, a good blank tells you a lot about how a crank bait or spinner bait is running, what type of object your bait is encountering in the water, etc.  But for a slow bait, like a plastic for example, you'll feel every tic by touching the line.

Fast or slow, I find no difference, and I haven't said keeping a finger on the line is less effective than relying on the blank, for similiar results.  But I don't think "we" are talking apples to apples in this conversation.   Any "tick" noticable with line contact, is tranferred at the rod tip and transmitted down the blank.  If you feel it with your finger on the line, that vibration has already been picked up by the blank and transmitted to your finger - if you are keeping it in contact with the blank.  It may not be the same with a mid-level blank, I really can't say as I haven't used any in quite a while.  It is, however, very evident in the rods I currently own.  I have observed individuals using the finger contact with the line, often are using rods with a foregrip (this may be the point our views diverge).  In that instance line contact is likely perferrable with slow presentations, due to the slight dampening effect of the foregrip and the inability to keep contact with the blank in front of the reel seat.  In that case it would be possible that I could agree with you.   With the rods I use, I can tell you that the pecking of a blue gill at a finesse worm, for example, is more discernable, or identifiable to me via the vibrations from the rod blank than from contact with the line.  Those thumps are stronger from the blank than from any line I've used so far.  Not that you can't feel them pecking a bait from contact with the line, but it's different feeling them via the blank.
The removal of the foregrip is one of the greatest advantages when using a quality rod - again this is my own opinion.  It's the primary reason I dediced on the rod brand I use (followed very closely by the St. Croix Legends) rather than the G. Loomis IMX, preferred by our mutual friend.  You may have noticed that most of the upper end rods (and some mid and entry level rods also) now are doing that as well as joining in the current facination with split grips.

Maybe you guys should spend more time fishing and less time "discussing" fishing.... just a thought... :50:

I surrender.  He's way to hardheaded to do so.  For such an  intelligent and learned man, he  certianly enjoys argu...... I mean discussion.   Someday, maybe, if I get the opportunity to fish with him, I'll put a premium rod in his hand and maybe the light bulb with brighten up.  Until then he'll just have to stick with "old school".
I have no time for fishing anyway, too busy at work.  This is all I have to occupy my non-productive time.  And it's been fun yanking his chain.    And Doc, you remember the last time you had a thought?   I didn't think so.
