Title: Battery Question?
Post by: Rick on October 22, 2017, 11:28:13 AM
Hey Guys, So I bought a brand new Deep Cycle (1000 Cranking Amps) Optima Blue Top Marine Battery about 6 months ago. It shows 13.8 on my tester this morning after charging all night. My motor cranks on today so the problem was a drained battery. Not sure why it was so low?  I believe its an Optimum 27m . All of my electronics (3 Lawrence Units, Livewell, Lights, Engine, etc) run to this battery. The only thing that doesn't is my Trolling Motor that is connected to my two parallel AGM Batteries. Is this normal for the battery to drain so fast? Normally I fill the live well and then put my setting on timer, but yesterday it was on manual all day by mistake, so it must have been constantly running thru the day. Still not sure if thats enough to drain it so the engine won't crank by 2:15pm in the afternoon. Any help or ideas appreciated.

Rick, I have the same set up in my boat except my cranking battery is a group 31. I also replaced my cranking battery this spring with a blue top from cabelas. No issues so far. Do you charge your batteries right after an outing?  Did you check all of your connections?  Did you top off the charge right before the tournament?

I charge right when I get home fully. I can tell you that with the cooler nights my batteries took more charge to top off before this tournament than previous tournaments. I hope you can get it sorted out.

Yes I charge them right away and keep them plugged in the night of the tourney. I think I ran my live well too long and didn't run the big engine enough to charge the cranking battery before it got too low.  This is the first time this happened to me so thats what I think happened. Im going to upgrade to a Optima 31group to get a little more juice and hopefully the won't happen again.

Upgrade to a regular AGM, not the spiral cell technology.  Optimas have had varying result in bass boats.

Get yourself a regular group 30 or 31 AGM and you'll never run out of juice to start the big motor even after running your livewells manually all day along with the graphs.

Ok so I was allowed to turn my battery back in and upgrade to a bigger size with no cost(but the difference). SO I just put in a 31group Optima blue top. Hopefully Stan it lasts!

My bad Rick. This is the battery that I installed in my boat this Spring. It has been robust with no issues. I hope you have better luck.
