Being new, I gotta get some post #'s so I thought I would shoot out a new (probably been done before) topic: Shimano reels versus the others . . .
I like the Shimano products, generally. I own a Stradic that I purchased in the early 90's that is still in my arsenal. The Shimano baitcasters that I own are still relatively new since I only started using the things within the past couple of years. My only complaint with the baitcasters is that sometimes the lever which opens the adjustment side of the reel sometimes gives me a blister.
As a side note, DocIrv mentioned that I should check out the Steez and I probably will but I still want to look into the Shimano Core. Only problem is that the Core is only sold as a right hand model (I am right handed but I reel with my left and cast with my right . . . I don't understand why the "standard" reels are for reeling with the right and casting with the left).

im going through the same problem. i love bass pro baitcasters, and there new one (nitro i think) looks awsome. only problem is its right hand only. ill probably end up going with another rick clunn model.
as for shimano, thats all i use for spinning reels. they make some great reels for a good price. not too big on their baitcasters though. im a fan of the magnetic brake adjustment being on the side. quantum makes some good reels too.
are you looking for a super top of the line reel and willing to spend some dough. if so, the steez is about as good as you can get.
if your just looking for a great all around reel, you have a few options from both daiwa and shimano.
i still think the best deal out there right now is the $50 rebate shimano is giving on curados right now.
i have three curado 101d reels now. the 100 series size is light, easy to palm, and suits many applications.
you'd be hard pressed to find anybody out there say anything but good about these reels.
if your into a larger reel, curad 201d is a proven winner as well.
lots of options from daiwa too. i have a couple of the advantage 153hstl reels from last year. i like em a bunch.

this year they upgraded that reel and called it the the 153hsta which is also reviewed on that site. might be another option for ya if your looking for a lower priced reel.

J/J I thought you might be slippin' away to the REVO side.......... what happened? Anyway those that have fished around me know I prefer Pflueger. Presidents, Supremes and a Summit are mostly what I use. Tried a couple of the REVO SC reels last year and they are pretty nice, they just need getting used to, their "free spool" is awesome. Also prefer the Pflueger President spinning reel also. I have one Shiamano and it's a specialty reel for jig fishing - the Scorpion Quickfire (Japan version of the Castaic).

I have shimano curados and castaics and they are very consistant. I have tried Doc's Steez and they are great, but cost $16.50 per cast. I have one Quantum, also a nice reel. I think they are all good so you need to find the ones you like and use them.

My $0.02...I dont own a single Shimano. I own mostly Quantum, and love them, so will be sticking with them for the time being.

bruce, i still like my revo, but my curados are just a little more "no nonsense-y."
i'll probably only have the one revo from here on out. i need one more rod, then i'm pretty much done buying tackle this year.
...until i get into the big swimbait thing.

And the best ones are far cheaper than the best Shimano reels.

I happy you love Quantum Pillager. I did try a couple of their reels when I first switched to baitcasters - about 5 years ago. ADMITTEDLY they were not top-of-the-line Quantums. The two I tried were like $79.00 reels, don't remember the model number, possibly their PT's - but they were both junk.... neither lasted into the second year. Both got noisy, gears grinding (yes I cleaned them) after the first year. Trashed them both before the second year was over. I hear the more expensive Quantums are good reels, but my initial experience will not let me take a chance on them. I went to Pflueger and haven't looked back. The President was very highly rated on TACKLE TOUR.COM which was the reason I tried them initially. I've been using them for 3 years with NO problems at all. If you compare the specs on them they outshine reels costing much more. They've held up well, don't have the track record of the Shiamano Curado, but the Curado is now $200.00 to the President's $139.00 and the Plueger is a better value, and in my opinion a better reel.
It's a great thing that we have SO MANY choices. It's just difficult making the correct one. :rolleyes:

I agree with ya' bassboogieman. Sometimes, I have such a difficult time deciding on thing versus the other, so I end up buying both.
Even something as simple as hooks can be difficult . . .Example - I go to buy some new hooks for my crankbaits. While looking at the hooks, I see all different sizes, styles, and colors. Instead of selecting one particular size, I buy three sizes and two different brands. For the most part, I end up using only one size and only one color. Now I have extra hooks that take up space and I will never use them.

believe me, you are not alone. :grin:
and it gets worse. somewhere down the line you'll look at all those extra hooks and ask yourself, "now what kind of baits should i buy to use these hooks on?"
i have about 15 spools of old line that i need to buy new rods and reels for before the line goes bad.

lol. your catching on. btw, many bags you have around the house could be classified as tackle bags. don't limit yourself to bags bought only at bass pro and cabelas.

my guess is that the rod and real have either drifted off or been caught by someone else by now, but i might take you up on that offer. either that or we could work out a deal where i trade you the gps coordinates for a avid rod. you can keep whatever you find. :grin:
