The Mets are still paying for the mistake of signing Bobby Bonilla in 1992

... and they will be for a long time.

Bonilla struck a deal with the team in 2000 in which it purchased an annuity rather than pay him the remaining $5.9 million of deferred money that he was owed.

So every July 1 from 2011 to 2035, Bonilla will receive $1.19 million, with the total payments adding up to nearly $30 million.

Although I do hate the Met's, and glad we never had to endure Bobby Bo, it was not as bad as it looks when the deal was made, NUT now with flat returns since 2000, Bobby Bo looks like a genius.

The value of getting $5.9M in 2000 earning 8% over the avg is worth $94M in 2035

The value of getting paid $1.19M in 2011-2035  & earning 8%fover the avg in 2035 is worth $94M

So its a wash @ 8% avg annual return.

The Mets do well if the avg annual return is greater than the 8%, while Bobby Bo is winning if the rate goes under 8%, and considering the market is basically flat since 2000, the Mets are feeling major pain right now.  Bobby Bo must have know the market was going to be flat these past 10 years.

Today that 5.9M is worth the same $5.9M, so is 2035 with 8% it will be worth $40M, Bobby Bo's Annuity will be worth $94M, = Mets in the Pain Zone!  But had market made 10% this past decade, and both earn 8% from here on out initial 5.9M would be worth $115M, while Bobby Bo still has his cool, $94M

(PS this was boring lunch break, and I'm in accounting so this is kinda fun for me.)

Good signing for the Phils.  people complain about Blanton, but He is a solid  # 3 starter

In 44 total regular season starts for the Phils over the past two years (2008-09), Blanton is 16-8 with a 4.09 ERA and the team is 26-18 (.591) in His games. He pitched at least 6.0 innings in 29 of those 44 starts.

If Hamels can pitch close to his  2008 form, Phils will have one of the best 1 - 2 - 3  rotations in the league......Happ as a 4, should come back to earth and pitch around .500.....don't ask about  # 5......

Hey, I like Happ.  I liked Hamels when he first came up too and people were calling me crazy.  Give Happ a chance.  I think he has good stuff and a great demeanor out there.

Hey, I like Happ.  I liked Hamels when he first came up too and people were calling me crazy.  Give Happ a chance.  I think he has good stuff and a great demeanor out there.

Happ was  " good " but in reality, when looking at his peripheral numbers He was more fortunate .

You can use a couple of metrics to spot starting pitchers who fall into the fortunate group.

One measurement is the percentage of balls hit in play against the pitcher that fall for hits (BABIP).( Batting  Average of Balls In Play )

He might post a low BABIP one year because he has a strong defense behind him or because he has faced many weak offenses. But that mark likely will revert to a mean of roughly .300 the next season.

Therefore, his ERA and walks/hits per innings pitched (WHIP) might look good because of a low BABIP, but when his BABIP normalizes, so too will his ERA.

A pitcher also could be stranding more runners on base than normal, or getting bailed out by his bullpen a lot. A tool called strand rate identifies the percentage of runners that a pitcher — or his bullpen — is able to strand.

Pitchers with strand rates over 80% always seem to have good ERAs. Strand rates tend to normalize around 70% for most pitchers.

As a result, a strand rate above 80% likely will drop significantly the next season.

Happ's numbers toward the end of the season were :

He had a .260 BABIP along with an 82% strand rate. Happ's 2.77 ERA would be two earned runs higher if BABIP  and strand rate were more were it normally would expected  to be. In addition, his year-to-date surface stats have been influenced greatly by the 1.67 ERA he posted in August.

But that mark was driven by a .230 BABIP and 90% strand rate, both marks that are unsustainable over extended stretches.

Once the opposing teams built a book on Happ, His numbers started to climb,  He needed to develop a 3rd, consistent pitch to keep batters off guard.
