Jet motors

Hey guys, I am kinda' new here.  I am not a member but I frequently read the  posts on this site.  Anyway, I have a question about jet motors . . .  this year I am hoping to "pull the trigger" and buy a new boat (all that I have now is an aluminum bass boat that I keep on a private lake).  I am certain that I want an aluminum mod-v, roughly 17 foot, with a jet motor and intend to do as much fishing as possible on the Susky and Delaware River.  The guy at BPS tells me that if intend to get on plane with three people in my boat, I need at least a 60/40 jet. 

Is the 60/40 not enough power, just enough power, or overkill?

P.S.  I sincerely appreciate everyone's help on this . . .

If you plan on fishing 3 adults in the boat,  I would consider a 90/65. I had a 1750 express with a 60/40 merc a few months ago, with 3 guys in the boat I had speeds at 20mph. It also took a LOT longer to get on plane..... But to answer your question the 60/40 is just enough power... LEt me know if you need anything else..

Why the jet? Unless you fish really shallow waters a lot, I would consider a prop. Of course, all the guys in my club are laughing at me right about now as I am well known for hitting underwater obstructions all the time!!!! For three guys, with a full load of gear I would not go less than a 90 jet. Are you going to buy a new boat or look for a good used one?

Doc, my obsession for a jet motor originated after going on a guided trip on the Delaware.  My guide had a jet motor and was able to get his boat through some very shallow areas above the Sandts Eddy launch.  It was amazing how the boat just cut through the low September water without any problem whatsoever.  At that moment, I decided that when I purchase a boat, it will be with a jet motor. 

I really hope that I will be able to make the purchase this year.  Last year, the tax man ate my boat account.

If the tax man eats your boat account again this year, make sure you create a tax account as well as a boat account for next year.  and after the boat purchase, make sure you keep putting large amounts in the boat account each month for all the hidden costs the dealer doesn't tell you about at the time of purchase.  :grin:

Really though, good luck.  Come out to one of our meetings.  Third Thursday of every month at John's Pizza in Frazer, just east of US 202 on US 30, 7pm.  There is a meeting this Thursday night.

Pillager, I certainly appreciate the invite.  I have contemplated the idea of joining but at this point, am hesitant because I don't have much time to participate.  Last thing that I want to do is be a lame member.

No such thing as a lame member.... we all have to keep our priorities in order.... if you can get to just a few of our tourneys you will be able to learn a lot (that is assuming you might need to learn about some places you have not fished yet and we do)

Come on out and see what we are about.  We certainly understand people who don't have enough time yet but might like to in the future.

We also have Tuesday night open tournaments all summer at Marsh Creek.

I will try to make tommorrow's meeting but I have a client meeting at 5:30.  It never fails, I always have some type of conflict.
