Battery question

I am in the planning stage on tweeking the extras in my boat order.  One issue is the battery selection.  The sales guy said that the boat will come with Interstate batterys.  He recommended that I not spend the extra money on the special batteries because they generally cost double and last about double the time of the basic Interstates.  In his opinion, better to get the cheaper battery and buy fresh ones every two years than to spend double and end up using batteries that are 4 years old.  I never even thought about this issue til' now . . .

As for the batteries - It really is a shame you missed Irv.  Cabela's AGM batteries are what I'm using.  Check out the specs, their CCA rating is very high and are well worth the money in my opinion.  I have 4 in my boat, I believe Irv does also.  No water to add, will not freeze over winter (I leave them in the boat).  Take a charge quickly, and last all day.  I wouldn't buy any other battery.  Jim and Dave C both are changing over and I would expect 4 years minimum of trouble free, worry free battery life.  Forgetting to maintain water levels in wet cell batteries is the leading cause of failure - and it's very easy to let them get low.  Interstate's are supposedly ok for a wet cell, just DO NOT let the water level get low.

I'll second what Bruce said.  I had Interstates in my boat when new. They were shot after one season fishing tidal water.
I run two group 30 Cabela's  AGM and a Group 27 for the cranking battery now.
No maintenance, won't freeze, just clean the connections once a season and go.

Night and day difference in the trolling motor power. Interstates would be done at the end of a TX, the Cabelas still have plenty of juice left.
