Oh come on. Fishing is not "american". Fishing has been around in many forms for many centuries. Maybe we made the sport of bass fishing be what it is, but please...

It's quite ironic though that this might be a tie for the world record just as Japan is trying to rid it's waters of "invasive species" such as black bass. The record is tied, and they eliminate bass from their waters forever.

World Record fish are just that WORLD, so where ever a species breaking a World Record is caught is of little consequence. Just because the "WORLD" SERIES isn't really a WORLD SERIES, fishing World Records really are. Generally, Americans have taken the term WORLD to mean the USA which is really inconsiderate, don't ya think? :undecided:

Actually, Cuba is another place they thought the record might fall. There are some big bass lakes there, and they don't get much fishing pressure, mostly because US citizens are still prohibited from travelling there. If that ever opens up, I think there will be more trips there than to Mexico, especially with the dangerous state of things there right now.

exactly, its a world wide thing. thats where your sense of american pride is supposed to kick in and make you want your country to be on top. thats like saying it doenst matter who wins the olympics, just as long as they play the game.

It really doesn't matter in the Olympics anymore Brian. Since the playing field hasn't been level for such a long time. Actually hasn't been untainted by POLITICS since 1936. This County tried (admiralbly) for decades sending "amateur" athletes to compete against what were essentially professionals from other Countries and finally giving up and joined sending the Pro's to do battle on behalf of this Country. In order to keep it near the top (especially in AMERICAN sports - LIKE BASKETBALL) and not be a continual contender for the bottom of the heap which would have been an unbearable embarrassment. The Olympics isn't about sports, it's political. Remember 1972? Probably not, you weren't born yet. 1980? 1984? All were overshadowed by Politics, at the expense of "sport", so it's evident which is the important factor when it comes to the Olympics.

Ryan - I'll be in Canada in a few weeks, Cubans are OVER THE COUNTER up there. I will honestly say as one who enjoys a good cigar, that Cubans are a bit overrated for the most part. I have both Cuban and Dominican Cohiba's for example and there is little difference in the taste, burn, or consistancy between the two. Top shelf Dominican's are every bit as good as Cuban, I think. and are not a hassle to get. Actually several of the Dominican producer's also have Cuban facilities so you're pretty much getting the same cigar - another reason I don't agree with the ban against the Cuban cigars.

Well the olympics is a whole other topic entirely, but if you think about it in the purest sense of the spirit of the contest, the best athletes SHOULD be representing the various countries. Not sure where the pro/amateur debate crept in there, but in ancient Greece, I doubt they worried about the runners who were employed by the army vs. the ones that weren't. In fact, weren't some of the athletes full time "performers"? If they were, then they were as professional as one could be in those days.

i was born in '87, but are trying to say the miracle on ice was overshadowed by politics? cause im pretty sure more people could tell ya who won the game, as apposed to who the leader of the USSR was at that time

oh, the miracle on ice was a huge thing, not overshadowed by politics. I think what I'm saying is, we may have won a lot more ice hockey titles if we had our pros playing all those years.
