senko rod

one thing i cannot get down is rod selection for different applications. when i came on asking about spinnerbaits rods last year, you guys pointed me in the right direction. so im asking you to do it again.

ive been throwing senkos on a spinning rod my life, but ive had a bunch of people say that a baitcast is 10x better for senkos. so one of the things on my list this year is going to be a baitcast set up, strictly for senkos. im looking at the Abu Garcia Vendetta . i was looking at them at SFT's booth at  Bass U, and i think im going to pair it up with a Revo s or a Revo sx .  i was thinking maybe a 7' M fast or a 7'3" MH fast.

what do ya think?

Kistler Magnesium "Senko Special" (if they still make it).

It is a MH rod with good backbone to set the hook and a sensitive tip to feel the bait. 

You will want a baitcast reel that is good for finesse baits such as Chronarch Mg, Core 50, or Daiwa Sol.

I have heard good things about the Vendetta, however, many have commented that is quite tip heavy (see posts on Tackle Tour).

the vendetta is supposed to balance real well with the Revos. im going to head up to SFT in a month or so, hopefully let pair them together and check it out.

I held a few vandettas at BPS last week and they didn't seem tip heavy to me. Having said that, I would second the kistler magnesium, by bro has one and it is slick as anything.

far as the revos go, haven't used the s or sx, but have the stx and premier.  haven't had the best luck throwing lighter baits with those reels.  they are much much easier to fish with some weight on the line.

did a bunch of research for a weightless worm baitcasting set up last year.  ended up getting a couple falcon cara finesse jig rods (CC-5-1610MH) and couldn't be happier.  with a curado 101d, this set up works great.  
had lots of trouble casting with my other mh rods, but this one has a great tip for tossing light stuff.
they have a weightless worm rod that has a great reputation for this as well, but i wanted a little longer rod, so went with the finesse jig model.

I just don't buy it.  I love a weightless senko on a spinning rod with braided line.  Easy to cast a mile.  Now for a senko that I'm pitching with a weight, then I go to a casting rod.  But I'm normally still using braid.  6'6" rod with some backbone to haul out the 3 pounders.  If it has backbone, the rod really doesn't matter that much when you're pitching weight.

Why not stay with the spinner, I mean how much better can the caster be if your happy with the spinning outfit. The fish cant see the reel you know. If you can place the worm where it needs to be why change. C'mon man. You throw a spinner bait with a spinning rod and your worried about a SENKO.  :grin:

If I had to I would lean towards daiwa. My personal preference.

pretty much a matter of personal preference.
i use both.

open water, wacky, skippin under stuff, open light hook sweep settin... i'll use the spinning set up and give the drag a work out.
light line, light hook stuff... i don't have a spinning rod with more than 8lb test on it.

for casting into wood, rocks, junk, etc with the hook buried, i'd rather have some heavier line and a heartier rod...  harder hooksets and get em out of the cover and to the boat quicker... i'm just more comfortable with a baitcaster set up for that.

Casting for me.  The best rod I've found (and I admit prejudice) is an '07 Kistler LTA 6'9" MH (HE69MHAPC), paired with a Pflueger President (the small frame).  I've was looking for another, but they are hard to come by.  I also have a couple Argon's (same specs) that I'm now using for Senko and TR worm, the LTA is seeing duty now as a spinnerbait rod.  The Argon rods are nearly identical to the older LTA, with the exception of the split grip (that I'm still not sold on).  It's all personal preference, if you're comfortable with spinning that's cool.
Casting rods in 6'9" - 7'3" MH/fast would be ideal, for me.

You might want to keep your eyes out for a good deal on a Kistler Argon rod.  They have been discontinued for 2010 and will likely go on sale soon.

All the Kistler models have been on close out for about six weeks to clear them out before the '10 models are introduced and I've bought a few.  I hadn't heard the Argon was being discontinued - seems a bit strange since it was just introduced and has been selling well.  Several of the lines are undergoing changes for the comming year and  Kistler is removing a few rods from certain models, which will tighten up the choices available within a specific line of rods.  The one thing I really liked about Kistler was the varity of lengths & actions available in a line of rods, that appears to be changing.
